How to Get a Kenya Visa: A Step-by-Step Guide for Travelers

If you’re planning a trip to Kenya—whether for safari adventures, beach getaways, or business—you’ll likely need a visa. Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a Kenya visa hassle-free.

1. Types of Kenya Visas

Kenya offers different visa types depending on your purpose of travel:

  • Single Entry Visa – Valid for 90 days, ideal for tourists.
  • Transit Visa – For travelers passing through Kenya (valid for 72 hours).
  • East Africa Tourist Visa – Allows travel to Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda (multiple entries, 90 days).
  • Business Visa – For work-related visits.
  • Multiple Entry Visa – For frequent travelers (valid for 6-12 months).

Most tourists apply for the Single Entry Visa or East Africa Visa.

2. Kenya Visa Requirements

To apply for a Kenya visa, you’ll need:

Passport – Must be valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.
Passport-sized photo – Recent white-background photo (digital or physical).
Completed visa application form – Filled online via the eCitizen portal.
Proof of travel – Flight itinerary (return/onward ticket).
Accommodation details – Hotel booking or invitation letter.
Visa fee payment – Paid online via credit/debit card.

Note: Some nationalities (e.g., South Africa, Ghana, and a few others) can get a visa on arrival, but applying online is recommended to avoid delays.

3. How to Apply for a Kenya Visa Online (eVisa)

Kenya’s visa process is mostly online (eVisa). Here’s how:

Step 1: Visit the Official Kenya eVisa Portal

Step 2: Create an Account

  • Register on the eCitizen platform (if you don’t have one).
  • Log in and select “Department of Immigration Services”.

Step 3: Fill Out the Visa Application Form

  • Select visa type (Tourist, Business, Transit, etc.).
  • Enter personal details, passport info, and travel plans.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

  • Passport bio page scan.
  • Passport photo (JPEG format).
  • Flight itinerary & hotel booking.

Step 5: Pay the Visa Fee

  • Fees vary:
  • Single Entry Visa: ~$51 (varies by nationality).
  • East Africa Visa: ~$100 (covers Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda).
  • Payment is made via credit/debit card.

Step 6: Wait for Approval (Usually 2-7 Days)

  • Once approved, you’ll receive an eVisa via email.
  • Print it and carry it with your passport when traveling.

4. Visa on Arrival (For Eligible Travelers)

Some travelers can get a visa on arrival at Kenyan airports (Nairobi, Mombasa, etc.). However, this can involve long queues, so applying online is faster and safer.

Eligible Countries for Visa on Arrival:

  • South Africa
  • Ghana
  • Zimbabwe
  • A few others (check Kenya’s immigration website for updates).

5. Important Tips for Kenya Visa Application

✔ Apply at least 2 weeks before travel to avoid delays.
✔ Double-check all details before submission (errors can cause rejection).
✔ Keep a printed copy of your eVisa for immigration checks.
✔ If visiting Uganda & Rwanda, the East Africa Visa is the best option.
